I know I am watching this video 5 years after it was published, but hope someone can explain the ratio and percentage content. Example: chicken manure 12:1. How is this ratio "measured?" Shovel fulls? Hand fulls? Weight, or are we just making our best guess?

My little survivalist hobby garden is focused on answering this very question. The answer is Sunflower tubers (Jerusalem Artichokes) and small heritage pigs that get most of their nutrition from forage (they are penned up, I forage for them, greens, acorns, walnuts etc...) Amaranth, mammoth sunflowers and pinto beans getting an honorable mention. This year I am experimenting with buckwheat and huauzontles. Also, Chenopodium Album produces a lot of nutrition (for both man and pig) with VERY little input, including a lot of high calorie seeds in late fall. I live in central Oklahoma, in the cross timbers, we have long hot summers.

Im on 20 acres in northern California 16"-18" rainfall a year. Id like to put in a few swale on the bottom right portion of the property first pulling water from the main primary valley ( maybe giving a bit of fall on the swale to move water. I was advised 6'-8' wide 12" -18" deep. Delma cobbly loam quite sandy soil. Any input is appreciated

Most people dont have a crew available for daily turning. Also, you only get about 10% of what you put in as conpost when you're done. Finding enough material is prohibitive.

I would really love a series on creating food forests & wind breaks in the ever- challenging Texas panhandle. We have all extremes: occasionally down to -20 in winter, up to 110+ in summer, damaging year-round winds between 20-50+ mph, and rain is all or nothing, plus hail every April. We have 11 acres, only slightly sloped. Wanting to use mostly medicinal/edible vegetation. I'm looking at large pampas grasses, locusts, soapberry, elder, hawthorn, etc...and creating swales. Would love a pond. We need shade, water capture, affordably improved soil, quality dry-land pasture for a couple head of cattle. Thank you for taking the time to read! 🙏

Let people then consider their food: how WE pour down rain in abundance & meticulously split the earth open ˹for sprouts˺, causing grain to grow in it, as well as grapes & greens, & olives & palm trees, & dense orchards, & fruit & fodder- all as ˹a means of sustenance 4U & U animals. Greening up deserts is a wonderful accomplishment. The permaculture method will guide you so as to be able to grow trees, bushes, and crops. I also like the idea of growing 7’ x 7’ desert grass grids and planting crops and trees within the protective grass walls. Eventually, the extremely long grass roots will help compost the desert sand. The desert grass will also raise the water table and bring more rain.
